Key Feature
Main Task
The goal was to find a Growth Marketer capable of building the entire marketing function from scratch, single-handedly: from demand generation to a system with measurable metrics.
Who We Were Looking For
A track record of building marketing from the ground up at early-stage startups
Experience with AI agent automation (Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Devin, etc.), specifically building workflows, dashboards, and custom tools, rather than just copywriting and brainstorming
Readiness for an IC role: driving the direction independently, hands-on
Challenges
The client's initial request was broad: generating inbound demand (via blog, SEO, LinkedIn, and referral programs), ensuring event conversion, and structuring a marketing system with clear metrics. This scope required more than marketing know-how – it called for a genuinely versatile candidate, especially since earlier attempts to build this function internally hadn't worked out. The role needed someone able to build their own tools and processes where none existed, rather than work from an existing playbook.
Our solution
We worked through the profile with the client in detail and aligned on growth priorities together, so we could calibrate the search precisely to the company's current stage. Two strong candidates made it to the final round; both completed the test assignment and passed all interview stages. The client found it difficult to choose, as both were fully qualified for an offer. The deciding factor was a recorded "Marketing Trends" lecture from Lucky Hunter School, featuring one of the finalists, Boris Denisenko. The client watched the recording on Lucky Hunter's LinkedIn page and saw how the candidate structured his thinking and presented material – that ultimately settled the decision.
From a Single Founding Engineer to a Whole Team: How We Built a Startup Team for Agentplace in One Month
We discussed the profile thoroughly with the client and mapped out priorities, given that the initial scope was very broad. From there, we continuously adjusted the search based on the client's feedback: without this alignment, it's difficult to calibrate the profile precisely to the company's current stage. This case shows that the deciding factor can be something beyond a resume, it's about how a candidate presents their expertise outside the standard interview, such as through public speaking.
